Maillage
In Cairo, specialized woodworkers create wooden mashrabiyas for façades and window openings. The components are assembled into repeated geometric patterns, forming an openwork lattice.
The series Maillage belongs to a contemporary photographic practice attentive to architectural structures and systems that filter light. This structure enables the circulation of air and light while reducing direct visibility from outside. The density of the lattice defines the level of openness between interior and exterior.
Through photography, these patterns become compositional surfaces. In some images, the use of a negative treatment reverses light and shadow values. This process transforms the perception of the threshold and suggests a shift in viewpoint: the interior seems to be seen from outside. The positive–negative contrast heightens the visual tension between shadow, light, and geometric abstraction.
